Antique Victorian Faux Jet Greecian Mourning Brooch. A delightful antique brooch dating to circa 1895. This is such a charming antique brooch in Black Vulcanite, a very early form of hard plastic, made from rubber. Vulcanite was used because of its resemblance to Whitby Jet, which was very popular at the time, but, rarer and much more expensive. The brooch is a mourning brooch, designed to be worn when in mourning for a departed loved one. The practise of extended mourning and mourning jewellery was popularised by Queen Victoria who stayed in mourning for the rest of her life, following the death of her husband Prince Albert. This pretty antique brooch is in the form of a circular vulcanite 'stone', decorated with a greecian inspired design. This delightful antique brooch measures approx 1 inch / 2.5 cm diameter. This is such a pretty piece of antique costume jewellery, the perfect accessory to add a touch of charm your antique or vintage inspired wardrobe. This pretty antique brooch has a a small area of wear to the edge. This delightful antique brooch has no other flaws or damage, good condition.
