OK so here are two terms that are often used in the antiques and collectibles world .... Art Nouveau and Art Deco and for many people, understanding and identifying which style is which can be tricky, so here are a few pointers.\n\n\n- Firstly, Art Nouveau and Art Deco are two very distinctly different styles, both with French origins. \n\n- Art Nouveau literally means 'New Art' and it was the earliest of the two styles, the Art Nouveau period is generally considered to be 1890 - 1910.\n\n- The Art Nouveau style was very typical of the Victorian Period, favouring earthy colurs and natural flowing forms and subject matter. Curving and returning, flowing lines lines, the femanine form, plant forms, foliage, flowers in in bud and overgrown in blossom are all elements of the Art Nouveau style.\n\n\n- Art Nouveau artists included Walter Crane and William Morris.\n\n\n- Art Decoratif or Art Deco, as it is better known, followed on from Art Nouveau and was almost a revolution against the earlier style.\n\n\n- Art Deco was a style that provided decoration that was simply decorative and did not attempt to reproduce decorative elements for other areas.\n\n\n- The French 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes' of 1925 that showcased and presented the Art Deco style and ideas to the wider public.\n\n\nThe Art Deco style is visually less fussy than Art Nouveau and it is geometric and stylized, using bright vivid colours.\n\n\nPlease note that this information has been obtained from a variety of sources, and it is to the best of our knowledge correct.
